In the past we have been enjoying the lists of recommended books and movies. While I was on vacation in Colorado I found a few new really cool books for those of us who like to check off the wierd stuff we enjoy.

In the books I was pleased to not find just the obvious choices. Their picks are often not the most "popular" of the works by a particular author, but the ones that are the best choices. I also found some specific novels that were left out that you see on every other list but bore most people to tears.

The other thing that is cool is the synopis includes a bit of back history on the work and the author, and great pictures to accompany...not just shots of the cover.

Bah, the library doesn't have any of those. I'll have to actually drag myself to a bookstore.

Ooooooh. Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxx is my favorite preface writer too!!!!

I noticed that also on the pictures. If it makes you feel better there are real people writing real prefaces in the books.

I might have to wind up with that 1001 Albums...book. At least it was written by a real guy.

That 1001 Albums book looks good. They all look good, actually. I'll have to pick them up!

I had a great time going through and checking off the things I had read and seen. It also pursuaded me to check out some things from the library I had not heard of before, and I am a big book nut.

Welcome, by the way, to HB the new person!

I just picked up a copy of the Albums book. While I may not agree with some of the choices and/or omissions, it says a lot when a book can make me want to listen to an album I dislike or had no prior desire to hear. Not only do I humble myself to say that I definitely benefit from having this book, but I know a few other reviewers who could stand to take a look at this book, if for nothing else than to up their game as well.

Request BBC america show 'Maid Marian & her Merry Men'. It's 15 years old but it's blackadder aimed at kids and adults alike, until the first season was released on dvd I'd forgotten just how great it was.

I have always wanted to complete the 1000 Places to See Before you Die. That is a fun book to work on.

As with most of these lists it's a great way to movtivate you to try new things. Sometimes I want to do something, anything, "NEW" but can't come up with it on my own.

I wonder if anyones ever done all 1001 things listed in any of those books?I've got a pretty good head start on that albums thing, and it wouldn't be too hard for me to get a hold of the others. I may start checking off certain things. I can certainly let you all know how I progress.

I've got a pretty good head start on that albums thing,

SO Robbo, I ran across a Garage Sale recently, and they had both albums from a band named 'Detective'. I was wondering if you have ever heard them?

Me being a collector of vinyl (somewhere in the 2200 ish range, some very valuable, some I could use as frisbees) this was a rare yet neat surprise!

I actually might have to check out the 1001 albums book. I am DESPERATE for some new songs on my mp3 player (i have about 50 songs and i've listened the hell out of all of them)

..they were on the same label as Zep but the Yes connections turned me off. Let me guess. You don't care for Yes. I guess the music was just too "indulgent". If so, I get that part. But since you've got an abundance of music at your fingertips, listen to the song Yesterday And Today. My best man sang it at my wedding. Tell me that ain't one sweet-ass love song. Anybody that cares, it's on their first album.

I'll be married 25 years come May 30th. These words say it all for me:

Why is there you,
When there are few,
People making me feel good.
Why is there me,
When air is free,
Some I can see better than I should,
There's only us,
Simply because,
Thinking of us makes us both happy
I think of you everyway, yesterday and today,
I think of things we do all the way everyday
Stand in the sea
Sing songs for me,
Sing happily making me feel good,
Watching your eyes,
Feeling your sighs,
Saying goodbyes better than I could,
There's only us,
Simply because,
Thinking of us makes us both happy
I think of you everyway yesterday and today,
I think of nothing but you things we do, things we do.

Yep, I'm gay. Eat your fuckin' hearts out. ;)

Surprisingly enough, the keyboard is really good. Not too over the top. Fairly raw sound though, like if you miked a garage rehearsal. Some songs you definately hear a Zeppelin sounds, yet others I caught myself really getting into it. Anyway, just thought I would attempt to turn you on to something different... They will not be my favorite band by any means, but definately worth a listening to now and then. Not too bad for $1.00

"Detective" had a few scratches, but "It takes one to know one" looked like it was opened and never played. I love it when old people clean out their closets, they seldom know what they are selling.

I bought George Harrisons "33 1/3" still in the plastic for $2.50 last year....

I bought George Harrisons "33 1/3" still in the plastic for $2.50 last year....See, now I'm jealous. George Harrison had the best post-Beatles career out of all of them. John has some great stuff in his catalogue, but for obvious reasons doesn't have the longevity. Paul has always been too poppy for me, and Ringo is just straight camp.

Back to my point; good find.

There's a guy that works as the greeter at the grocery store next to my establishment. I go in there frequently for inexpensive breakfasts and lunches, and the store's bank has a branch in the store. Anyway, he knows I collect vinyl as well so before he sends everything off to the flea market, he's going to give me first shot at anything I want.

You don't care for Yes. I guess the music was just too "indulgent."I wouldn't call it indulgent, although that is certainly a part of it. There's that whole crop of 70's prog-rock that I just can't get into. Yes and Rush ELP and others who would spend years in the studio engineering and mastering and eq-ing and tweaking until they got a technically sound album, but they were devoid of any feeling. I honestly found them boring.

I'm no new-wave fan either, but I'll take Kraftwerk and Devo over that 70's prog-rock, only because in my head Kraftwerk and Devo are totally making fun of that style of music.

I have a couple connections like that, but mainly my finds are at the yard sales. I can't believe how much they try to sell crap for in used books / music stores.

I like the creativity of some album covers, I have one album (Alice Cooper "From the Inside") where you open up different parts of an insane asylum, and there Alice is in one a padded room wearing a straight jacket.

Wow, there's some real "feeling' involved in that shit. Tell me, man, are you a musician of any kind, or are you just a music connosier(not that there's anything wrong with that). I know you run a music store and have listened to a ton of music. But how in the name of Vahalla can you call that music "devoid of any feeling". Jeezaloo, "Cemetary Gates" has more feeling than any thing those "electronic" bands have released. I'd fuckin' take the Pistols, X, and Black Flag over either one of those bands. I'm guessing a few of the musicians on the board will agree with me on this. Maybe it's just a generational thing. If your a drummer, or bass player, bands like Rush and Yes give you a totally different look at music. Sorry, Robbo, we see eye-to-eye on a lot of things but this ain't one.

PS: If I missed the fact that you are a musician, I'm truly sorry.

Kraftwerk and Devo. Wow, there's some real "feeling' involved in that shit.I know there's no feeling in it. I said I'd take it over Yes only because I don't like what Yes does. I wouldn't call myself a Kraftwerk fan by any means.

Tell me, man, are you a musician of any kind, or are you just a music connosier(not that there's anything wrong with that). I know you run a music store and have listened to a ton of music. But how in the name of Vahalla can you call that music "devoid of any feeling".
I wouldn't call myself a musician either. I'm self taught in guitar, but my playing of the instrument is quite masturbatory; I play alone when I'm sure no one is going to be around, and if I'm caught I feel really embarassed by it. There are very few people that have heard me play guitar, because it's a very intimate thing for me.

Without divulging too much of my resume, I will say that I've had an overly substantial ammount of musical theory to know what is technically sound. I also have been involved in enough studio sessions in various capacities to know when artists are trying to prove the size of their own dicks. Couple that with my classes on the business side of music, and I know when artists are just trying to record a hit.

I'd fuckin' take the Pistols, X, and Black Flag over either one of those bands. I agree completely. The reason I ventured into punk was because I absolutely loathe bands like Yes and Rush. I find them boring, just like I find, get this, the Allman Brothers boring all be it for much different reasons (and I actually respect the Allmans). I discoverd the punk scene because I liked the minimalist style, the DIY attitude, and I found more feeling in it. I also liked the attitude of, "we make this bad music because what you make is even worse," which is mocking mocking that whole era of stadium, corporate, and prog-rock, as well as disco. I mentioned Kraftwerk and Devo not because I necessarily like them (they're good for a laugh) but their style of making music is also mocking a lot of what punk was mocking, just doing it with overly synthesized music. It got ridiculous in the 80s when synth-pop was the only thing on the radio, and that also led me into the punk realm.

Sorry, Robbo, we see eye-to-eye on a lot of things but this ain't one.
We don't have to. I'd prefer we disagree, just because it allows me to flex my intellectual muscle as it gives you a chance to as well. I'm not planning on changing anyone's mind at all. And I've never said that my opinons are the end all be all, but I stand by something I have frequently repeated on this board and in real life: opinions are like assholes, everyone's got them. But in both cases, mine don't stink.

But in both cases, mine don't stink.Well, I think that's probably a matter of opinion, too. :p

The reasons I like bands like Rush and Yes are because I'm a bass player. I think Bams would tell you Tool gots some influences from those bands.

And I swear Robbo, if you were born back around 1962(my 44th is next Thursday, whoopty-fuckin-doo), you would have a different opinion of that music. Because in my teens nearly everything out was disco or electronica.

Like I said I think this is more generational than anything. Although psychofiend seems to find some pleasure in some of that old stuff. But that may have just fucked up whatever point I was trying to make. ;)

Anyway, I do likes me some music discussion. It sure beats the shit outta politics and religion.

Devo is awesome. I don't care who you are. :)

By-Tor, Tool are fans of Devo. For reference, check out Adam's myspace photos for a picture backstage with Devo, or eMOTIVe for Maynard's crappy cover of "Freedom of Choice."

Nirvana and Soundgarden covered them too.

I don't care if you like Yes or not. Don't bring Devo into this shit! ;)

It is a bit pricey ($35) and the thing is HUGE because it's hardcover. It has movies you wouldn't think. The editor panel is partially foreign so I think it includes unusual stuff. I have the full list and will post it here...it will be LONG! :)
