Some will argue about "greatest", but I've got a few favs. The Dark Tower series tops them all. The Stand was awesome. It was great. Pet Sematary was the first book of his I read. Been loving his books since then.

The first one I read was Pet Sematary too. That and The Stand are my favorites, but I've stopped reading his books (although not for any particular reason). Lately it's been all John Grisham for me, if I read at all.

Two of my all-time favorite books are by King: Bag of Bones and Hearts in Atlantis.
King is one of my favorite authors, but his non-King-like work tends to be my favorites by him, like The Running Man, etc.

I was into Stephen King until I discovered Chuck Palahniuk.
My favorite of King's:
Firestarter
Bag of Bones (the unabridged audio is read by Kinh himself)
Eye of the Dragon (underappreciated)
Gerald's Game (messed me up and still haunts me at the idea)
Needful Things
I never got into the gunslinger series and I was unable to get past the first chapter of The Stand because it was just too much gory description.
When i was in HS, i read every King novel that was out, then i stopped in college (not enough time to read, when one is spending all his other time in pursuit of beer and Co-eds). I have since picked several up and spent last summer i guess, following the Gunslinger thru his many adventures.
Has there been any update about the Marvel Comics Gunslinger series that King was producing (i don't think that writing is the proper word)
Anyway, i like the shared universe that his books share.

Eye of the Dragon has some cross overs. Roland and Flagg are characters.

Loved Pet Sematary; tho' it scared the crap out of me. Christine and Misery are classics. And I liked the Green Mile when it was published in installments. I bought The Colorado Kid but haven't had a chance to read it. And, shocker, I even got Faithful on Audio CD. So, yeah, i guess I could be considered a fan of the man's work.

I'm on the mindset that the Dark Tower OGN won't see the light of day until middle 2007. But if you are an eternal optimist, you can be emailed when it finally does ship from those good ole boys at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BYATVU/qid=1156788297/sr=53-1/ref=tr_90331/104-5844258-2476730?n=283155).

Anyway, I like the shared universe that his books share. The cross-overs are righteous. You'll be reading along, and lo and behold, something from a book 10 years ago will pop up. Really good stuff.

My favorite occurrence of that was when Shawshank prison was mentioned in Delores Claiborne.

I prefer his work before his near death experience but I still enjoy his newer stuff.

I have on my bookshelf four: Four Past Midnight, Needful Things, Everything is Eventual, and Nightmares & Dreamscapes. They are hardcovers and I kept them. I also have Black House with He and Peter Staurb on the bookshelf but I have not started it. I picked it up on the cheap hardcover bin for the future.
My total list:
Carrie - fantastic in book and movie
Christine - ditto to the above. I LOVE this one
Danse Macabre
Desperation - way in need of editing
Dolores Claiborne
Everything's Eventual - Had a few very good stories in it.
Four Past Midnight - The Langoliers is the first story and wonderful
Gerald's Game - Like FanGirl, scared the pee out of me and made sure that I will never be tied up sexually. Seriously, it effected me that much.
Hearts in Atlantis - The first story was awesome and then the movie screwed the pooch.
It - The night I finished this book my metal closet bar collapsed at three AM and with the screeching I thought Pennywise had come to get me. I was 16 and climbed into bed with my parents screaming. I have never lived this down. Fucking awesome book.
Misery - Nothing will ever get this out of my head either. Shiver.
Needful Things - I think it is one of King's best works for pure imagination. It's is such a visual book.
Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Rose Madder
Shining, The - Great Book, Great Movie.

If you haven't, be sure to check out Bag of Bones, Zen. It's by far my favorite of his. One of the only books to actually give me shivers.

Personally, I loved the Dark Tower series. I have the last book, but i haven't even started it because i don't really want the wonderful story to end.

Since I am to lazy to look it up, is the Bachman books: Rage, The Long Walk, Running Man, and Roadwork? If so this is by far the best work I have read by SK. Everyone knows about The Running Man, but Rage and The Long Walk were way before their time. I read them in Jr. High and still remember the impact they had on my life. I am just getting into the Dark Tower series as it came so highly recommended on this site. I have also read, Thinner, It, The Dark Half, and almost all of his short story books (they don't pop in my head right now), one of my favorites had fingers that kept coming out of his drain and toilet.

It was a pleasent surprise when Annie Wilkes briefly mentioned the Overlook Hotel in Misery.
I started reading S.King to compare the novels with the movie versions. I Read The Shining - which is my fav along with Pet Semetary and Thinner, but I couldnt - and still cant (i do try from time to time) finish 'Salem's Lot. I find in too lacklustre. Im half way through and nothing had grabbed my interest. I was given a copy of the Tobe Hooper movie version and i can hear it calling my name. im tempted to give up on the book and just watch the film instead.
Also read Cell, buts thats only because of my clealry unhealthy zombie infatuation. movie version will be directed by Eli Roth. Fingers crossed - should be fun.

Ohhh, I just remembered one that I thought was really good, not horror as much as delving into the mind of SK. My Pretty Pony.
