Well, it depends on if you want a straight adaptation or not. I mean Shining is an awesome book and an awesome movie, but the adapatation is not good since they are very different.
Fight Club was close enough to be the best one I can think of.
And the Band Played On did an amazing job considering what it was adapted from.
So what is your critera? That the end result was a good movie? or that it was an accurate adaptation?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.. The others had too much "artistic license" ... ;)

If it's simply the end result was good, I'd have to say The Crow. Great book. Great film.

I mean Shining is an awesome book and an awesome movie,
Apparently King hated Kubricks version
Hence why he produced his own scareless wonder

accurate v. good film is a great point.
i was just thinking accurate adaptation when i posted the thread but good film is maybe more important since in the end a book is a book and a film is a film. sort of apples and oranges really.
its just that....i get so attached to books that i get pissy in movies when they add in some random parts. you can hear the director going "ok we need to add some motivation here!" or something as stupid.
but a good movie is certainly a good movie.
i really loved girl with a pearl earring (book AND film). gah. i'm such a chick!

do you think it would be possible to adapt a story from a gq magazine into a movie? i read this article about this guy and this mysterious caller and some phone sex..... it was a really good story.... i was strangly moved.... so i want to adapt that but does that seem weird that it is an article?:D
news articles are used all the time as the basis for movies and TV shows, have you never seen an episode of Law and Order?

What about poem adaptations. Wasn’t Troy based on one?
Next up, elsewhere, we can do best theme park ride to film adaptations, which gives us Pirates of the Caribbean and..........
The Haunted Mansion.
On second thoughts; let’s not go there.

Some Of my friends dident get it for some reason but most of them are only 16 and I grew up understanding more then the average kid at the age of 8(I am now 17). My parents Talked alot aobut plotics and what not. I come from a well cultured family. Yet both my parents are teachers.

I give you shit because you're butchering the English language! Any schmoe looking up your posts is going to immediately think to themselves "What a fucking moron" regardless of your post count. And I can guarantee you that you will be living in your parent's basement for a looooonnnng time if you don't improve your communication skills. How in the Hell do you expect to get ahead in life if no one can understand what the Hell you're saying? And if your mom really is an English teacher, she should be slapped up side the head for the wonders she's achieved with you. You can't even form a simple contraction, how the fuck can you tell if I'm not using proper grammar?
Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but you're a moron.

The books are butchered... they are fun movies, but not great adaptations.
One of the best adaptations is The Princess Bride. Even though they took out a major portion of the book (Westley's death and his rescue), the rest is very close to the book.

They are excellent adaptations. Had they been filmed exactly as they were written, it would have been a boring, over-long mess. I can take Tom Bombadil on paper, but if I had to sit through him singing and eating honey for a half an hour I would have lost it. The Two Towers, too, would have been terrible, having the whole Helm's Deep battle climax half-way through and then starting on Sam and Frodo? Euch!
Peter, Fran, Phillipa et al, did an incredible job on great books that would not have translated well to film as is.

However, what HAS been driving me slightly insane is all these movies about video games...and a horrible one that comes to mind...Blood Rayne...I was told it was BAD ,but funny. Excuse my lack of knowledge, but who's Tom Bombadil?
He's a character from The Fellowship of the Ring, the book version anyway. He helps the hobbits in the "dead forest" (I'm drawing from memory here, it's been a while since I read it :o) and then lets them stay in his house for a while, where they sing and eat bread & honey for what seems like an age. While he was charming on paper, he would have been a pointless addition to the movie, and yet many fans moaned at his omission. Purists, huh? Whatcha gonna do?

What about the hell that is a movie made into a book. I've seen 'em but I've never read them. Anyone else?
On the topic though, I usually read the book or watch the movie. I'm not a glutton for punishment.
I liked the Lord of the Ring and Harry Potter series, but can't comment on how good they are compared to the books.
I thought Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon sucked brussels sprouts.

Of Mice and Men was a decent book to film adaptation, but then again, it wasn't all that long of a book. The Grapes of Wrath was decent too, and that was back in the 40s. I've always been a huge fan of Steinbeck.

Yeah, the book was published in '99, then adapted to the cinema. Wikipedia says 'The plot of the film is fairly faithful to that of the novel, with a few key differences.'

I'd love the Hobbit to be made into a film, a non-cartoon film that is. Only problem I've noticed so far is that when Golum screams "My precious" in the prologue to the Fellowship. Bilbo has acording to nthe film only just found the ring whereas its in his pocket when he does the puzzles with Golum. At which point Golum wouldn't know the ring was gone.

It WAS pretty accurate, to my memory.. But, I enjoyed the book MUCH more than I did the film. (The manga had some pretty major differences, I think-- but, that was pretty enjoyable as well.)

Has anyone here read the book Hannibal by Thomas Harris and seen the movie? I loved the book and thought it was very interesting. However, I just watched the movie and want my 2 hours back. It's not a bad movie by any means, but it is a horrible adaptation. The film completely leaves out 2 main characters of the novel and ignores several others. I was just wondering if anyone else shared this opinion.

Best adaptation has to go to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Sticks completely to the book and I also heard he is really stoned while filming friggin classic.
