We don't talk about 'em enough on this board and I'm changing that here and now.
100 Bullets makes me soil my pants with joy.
Astonishing X-Men > (Uncanny X-Men + New X-Men)
Y-The Last Man is will be ending soon and with it one of the best books around.
Daredevil is better than Spiderman.
Is the Fantastic Four worth reading lately?
The Thing's thing, does it grow? Can rock grow?
Superman, great character but crap comic.

This thread makes me sad. I have nowhere near my home to purchase comics, and it's a past love I greatly miss.
For what its worth, the comics I read on a regular basis were Spawn, Supes, X-Men and Sam & Twitch, although from what I hear, Spawn has really lost a lot of its readers.
Is there an official top 10 comic chart somewhere? Which title is outselling all others?
And if I could add another possible question to discuss – which publisher produces the best quality titles?

It is quite good. Azzerallo and Risso should be given some sort of lifetime achievement award for producing a consistantly soild book almost every month. But isn't it wrapping up in the very near future? :(
Astonishing X-Men > (Uncanny X-Men + New X-Men)
True but the real equation should be:
Astonishing X-men > (Uncanny X-Men + New X-Men + Excaliber + Exlies + Xteme X-Men + Misc X-Men one-shots + Unnecessary X-Men mini-series)
Y-The Last Man is will be ending soon and with it one of the best books around.
Couldn't agree with you more. It will be sad when it wraps up but it will be glorious.
Daredevil is better than Spiderman.
In the context of that comparison, you are correct. But right now, anything in the Ultimate universe is better than what's going on with regular old Marvel U.
Is the Fantastic Four worth reading lately?
Not since Byrne left back in the 80s. That was when he was on his meds.
The Thing's thing, does it grow? Can rock grow?
Sure, old Benji's rocks can grow. It's been proven that his rocky exterior is comprised of his bodily waste like sweat, piss and other fecal matter. The only thing that he can't do is get an erection. He is essentially an eunich. Why else did the blind woman leave him for not only Norrin Radd but The Torch too?
Superman, great character but crap comic.
Obviously, you have not been reading All-Star Superman. Then, you would realize that your statement is ridiculous.

Unfortunately yes, issue 100. It scares me because I have been dissapointed with so many story ending before, but I just can't see these guys messing it up.

I know. The thing that scares me was they collaborated on a Batman arc and it was not as good as 100. I hope that they don't Soprano-out on us readers.
Indeed. Is it wrong that I'm bored of Wolverine now?
Nope, not at all. I think that Loeb might be in a creative rut right now.

Not a bad alternative. Solid stuff there.

Nope, just telling it like it is. The whoel Civil War/Death of Cap thing has left a sour taste on Marvel U. Now, the whole Hulk War thing might change that around but from what I've seen of the issue structure, Marvel seems to be more concerned about making more useless mini's and tie-ins than creating good stories.
Hmmm, I shall check it out. I can't imagine how you missed the perfect combo of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. You should have your head examined for that - and for putting that pink wig on. But that's another thread.

I'll agree with the tie-in crap that seems to be going on.
They're not satisfied unless they involve EVERY book in each story.
But if you take the straight Disassembled story and House of M without the tie-ins they haven't been too bad.
Although it looks like they'll be canceling out a lot of this shit with the Skrulls and blaming it all on them.
House of M particularly stuck out as the only one I think they got right.
It's made the X books (half)interesting for once and injected some actual feeling back in to the supposed outsiders. We'll see how this "endangered species" arc goes though before I completely pay them a compliment.
To be honest I haven't read enough of Morrison to be that swayed by his name on a book.
Although dipping in to some of his stuff has been on my agenda for a while.
Just not quite sure where to start yet.
Oh an I did read Azzarello's run on Superman, and I wasn't too impressed, so the Batman thing doesn't surprise me.
I think he needs characters of his own to really hit the nail on the head. When he takes over on other peoples books it just seems a little awkward.

Shocker, Marvel doing a retcon.. Nothing is ever permament in comics.

I can see that but since it was in every single X-book, I wrote it off. Not enough money for that crap.

Start with We3, Earth 2, or any of the first couple of trade with JLA. All very solid reads.

I agree. Plus, those characters have to be seedy and full of flaws as those traits plays to his strengths as a storyteller.

The usual ebb and flow of comic books where good creators go and not-so-good ones replace them. However, in some instances (such as this one), a good creator seems to miss the mark as far as how they write for a cerrtain iconic character(s) and how it resonnates with the title's history/continuity. But like I said, you should check out All-Star Superman to see how the character is written correctly but still has an air of freshness.

Not much out this week that interested me.
Although I did snap up the second chapter of Endangered Species in the X-Men books.
A little annoying to have to buy the whole book and only get about 5 pages of the story line I want to read. But it's nice to be reminded of how wank some of the X titles are at the moment outside of the odd good one.

So chapter 2 of World War Hulk came out this month.
It's amazing how this is getting half as much of a push as Civil War did and yet I have a feeling this could end much more satisfyingly.
This seems to be a completion of the Civil War arc too (if my theories prove to be right).
It's great to see Hulk finally getting the big story he deserves.

I'm barely paying attention to WWH. Although I do read Heroes for Hire and Punisher: War journal. Hulk just doesn't do it for me(although i did enjoy Nightmarica)
I have...well I have no idea how many comics anymore...I have 4 tightly filled long boxes (I really need to buy a 5th) so whatever you can fit in 4 boxes.
I buy these books curently:
Just about anything Spiderman(except for the current "SM: family" book)
Cable and Deadpool
HFH
P:WJ
Irredeemable Ant-Man (RIP)
Anything: Marvel Zombies
Anything: 2099
Anything: 1602
Captain America
Star Wars: Nights of the old Republic AND Legacy
Avengers: The Initiative
Halo: The...whatever the subtitle is(Awakening maybe?)
Onslaught: Reborn
Ultimate X-Men(ever since Ultimate Cable joined the book)
Any Army of Darkness books
Any 30 Days of Night books
Wizard
Toyfare
and probably more that I'm forgetting.

I am partial to the odd comic (Watchmen, V, Dark Knight and Dark Knight Returns etc. Yesm the obvious ones. They're comics, I refuse to call them graphic novels), but the only comics I've really fallen in love with are the Johnny the Homocidal Maniac series, the Squee series, and the Filler Bunny comics. JTHM is quite self obsessed, but the Filler Bunny comics are a hoot.

DD doesn't do it for me, never has. (and I haven't read X-Men much in the last few years, but I do enjoy them. I'm just gonna let them sort out their crossover mayhem beofre I get back into them)
The only reason I buy so many Marvel books is becuase that's the universe I first got into. I'm that crazy guy who once he really is into a universe has to read/see/know everything about it. (I'm the same way with Askewniverse stuff...which is why I'm here...) I started reading 2099 becuase my cousin Jon was reading them...and now I want all of them so I can have the full picture...(and so on)
I've even stayed away from Ultimate Marvel(with the exception being UXM becuase Cable is my fave character and when they introduced him I was kind of obliged to read it) just so I wouldn't have to buy even more.
I have no problem reading other stuff, I just try to make sure that it's self contained(Watchmen, VfV, 30DoN, AoD, etc) so that I'm not depleting my bank account any faster.
So if you have any self contained books/series to recommend I'm all for it. but I try to stay away from anything that is too interconnected to everything else.

You'd be correct(except for the five one shots of about 2 years ago), and that makes them a real bitch to find/read every issue.
I first got into comics before I could drive and that meant I was limited to whatever secondhand shops were near where my mom was shopping. So the only books I read were old ones.
Now that I can drive I can read whatever books I want, but if I ever see 2099 stuff I still try to pick it up.

This douche could draft a sure fire plan for world peace and it would be totally invalidated by the crap that spews from his keyboard. Seriously...take an extra 15 seconds and type the words the way they were meant to be spelled man. People might take you at least an ounce more seriously. If crap had fingers and typed on a keyboard made of crap, the printer attached to its computer would print out better crap than the tripe you vomit out whilst trying to be so damn "trendy". So I'm gonna talk about that spoiler now, if anyone minds, look away.
It is suprising she left. Especially since her history with the group. But to be honest she has been quite a peripheral character in this run. Maybe it was just a case that they wanted to give her a bigger spotlight. Best way to do that would be in a new environment... maybe.

Continued Spoilers! Damnation people, look away for Christ's sake!
That does not really work with the story lines that were happening right before she left. I believe it had more to do with the fact they wanted Wolverine and X-23 in a "Wetworks" style team and they thought a werewolf would look scary and sell comics to the kiddies.
I think she started slow, but had a lot to offer the book, not to give away too much for you, but to have a conservative Christian character not only leave to be a killer, but also to walk away from a serious relationship does not make sense.

I actually liked it a lot. I have to make myself watch it as variation story, or removed from the comic a bit. But it was certainly better than a lot of things out there.

Hey all,
First off as George Carlin said there are no dirty words so comics is, as many other stereotyped words, simply a word. And as far as I'm concerned, one of the best in the english language. Did you know that in Italian they are called fumetti. Just a wee bit of info for your next trip to Italy. Say; Uno (insert your weekly comic book titles here) fumetto per favore....Grazie mille.
Okay I have been reading negative comments about the Dark Knight Returns. Now While this turns bile in my stomach I can recognise that people have different tastes than mine. The thing about that book is however that you need to look at it in its historical context and how many modern stories used its semi-maniacal storytelling and artwork as a springboard. But its alright I'm not going to try and convert any of you. Just know I love it, and as far as I am concerned I have good taste. But that is also up for debate.
Moving on, I want to talk a little about Grant Morrison, whom I have noted people have commented on, but many have never read. A great introduction to Grant's vivid imagination without going to far into his askewed view would be 52. It is a great saga and his contribution to the writing can be truely felt if you know his work. Then you could move onto All Star Superman, with this he revitalised a character that I feel has been treated unkindly by recent writers. Both of these stories are a gentle introduction to a man with a brain that could be described with equal accuracy as brilliant or diseased. Both of these aspects are what make much of his work truely thrilling and/or disturbing. After that gentle introduction move onto some of his slightly grittier stuff such as his take on the JLA, and do not bypass Aztek when you do this. It rocks, and should have became a damn franchise. Alas, merde happens.
Your next stop should be Animal Man, where Grant's talents were first introduced to the American market, that was a great spin on an almost forgotten bit player. I love how that comic made me, a true carnivore, consider vegetarianism, albeit only when I was reading it. After which go to The Invisibles in which Grant was allowed to explore his own belief system through a ground breaking piece of work. It has John Lennon as a god in it for Christ's sake (is that how you spell sake, when I look at it now I think of hot rice wine, hmmm hot rice wine).
We3 should be next on your list, this is a fantastic book which can be at one moment truely terrifying and the next as cute as Wall-E. As does all of the man's work, it has a real sense of morality and social conciousness. It's about genetically enhanced animals by the way who are used as weapons, but are still inherently characterised by their genii. Plus Frank Quitely is in my mind a genius, his art conveys so much through as little application of pen to paper as he can manage. Homage to you Mr. Quitely. I think this guy should have a compilation of his own comic art. I would buy that, cut it up, and decorate my entire flat with it. I have a very small flat, can you tell?
Lastly, take a look at The Filth. As I say, lastly. You can't jump straight into this book without getting to grips with the creator's sensibilities, despite the fact that it is in my opinion his best work. This is a book where Grant's mind runs riot, you can get lost in this book for weeks, even if you read it in one night. I have read this so many times, and I am still not sure what really is happening. But in a good way, you know. When you almost don't want to hear the explanation for it, because then it would somehow detract from your own interpretation which is probably bollocks anyhow.
The book is a work of art, Morrison's mind is never more prolifically imaginative and confusing. Chris Weston's pencilling is breathtaking, it shows gritty realism juxtaposed with golden age technicolor. Gary Erskine's inking, Hifi and Matt Hollingsworth's colouring, Clem Robins' lettering, and Segura Inc's covers, make this a menagerie of thick gravy goodness.
As you can tell I am a huge fan of Mr. M's work, but aside from his storytelling what I love about him is his choice of collaborators, and in particular the artists that he works with. I think in this aspect he has been very lucky that those he worked with have been able to visually interpret what is going on in a famously feverish mind.
Okay, for those who stuck with that till the end I thank you. I realise that was a bit of a rant, but comic books are one of my last vices (I am a man who has fallen prey to most vices with an addictive passion, now I have slowed down and found that I still have the same passion for something that is only bad for my wallet Woohoo!). Comics are now literally my favourite subject. I have been an avid reader of this site and its message boards for a long time, and I just got the internet at home, so this has been a release of long repressed thoughts. I know I'm so backward, everyone has internet, but I had no money. I still have no money in fact, but I can no longer limit myself in this matter. So you can expect much shorter comments from me in future.
Love you all, you are all hilarious, and inciteful, and beautiful people.

Lastly, take a look at The Filth. As I say, lastly. You can't jump straight into this book without getting to grips with the creator's sensibilities, despite the fact that it is in my opinion his best work.
Totally agreed. I made the mistake of reading The Filth before any of his other books. I was baffled. To put it mildly. Although I knew I was enjoying it, even if I didn't know why. I kind of see the Invisibles as the training required to be able to understand The Filth. Well, I say understand, but I imagine my interpretation of it is probably rather different to yours.

It was good. VERY fucking layered, I can see why it's taken so long for an adaptation.
You could lose the pirate comicbook and make me happy and the rape thing walked a very fine line but all in all I enjoyed it.

He sure is. Worships a Roman snake-god called Glycon. A snake-god which was shown to be nothing more than a scam, when it was revealed to be the chief priest wearing a sock-puppet. Really.
I'm a huge Alan Moore fan. Greatest living Englishmen if you ask me.
Read From Hell if you don't mind something a bit dense and heavy-going. Or League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen if you want more of a light-hearted thing. Don't be put off by the terrible films, though.

Welcome to 1986, my friend.
Well, it's a story written for grown ups. In 1986, I would have been 7 and unable to appreciate it fully. I am very glad that I waited until now to read it. By experiencing the mainstream comics, I "get it" a lot better than I would have had I read it from with the few reference points I would have had even at 14 or 15.

I was never a superhero kind of kid, I ended up getting into comics when I was about 10 with the Simpsons comics. A bit like buying say, a Pokemon Comic, but still pretty funny and enjoyable for a kid that didn't really understand the idea of cashing in on something by producing it again in another medium. I feel like trying to find an old one an give it a flick through.
These days I'm pretty much sticking with newspaper comics and the like. I write for the student magazine (Salient) at Victoria University and we have a couple of guys who do original comic series for us. One of them is a guy who's been around Salient for years and I've read columns, articles, and comics by him for ages and laughed my arse off at them. He also has something to do with the Critical_Lemon name. Anyway, he's called Robbie Neilson and I picked up a printed collection of his 'Man' comic today and fell in love with comics again. I'm kind of annoyed I can't find anything of his on the net, meaning you'd have to get your hands on Salient or email him cause he deserves a bit of recognition. The drawing isn't 'OMFG amazing' but he's a funny bloke.

And Antonio, the last few panels were indeed the shit. The ending felt both lighthearted and chilling. Seeing Batman break his hard facade and laugh along with The Joker was fantastic. I had never seen that side of him before.
I think an addiction is growing in me. Me likey the bat.

SPOILERS, I suppose.
Did any one else interpret the ending the way I did? With Batman and Joker being the two escapees with how they're both insane. And the flashlight showing how Batman is always trying to offer Joker rehabilitation but he's afraid Batman will quit on him halfway through.

*Hightlight for to read* (I put that, because sometimes people get shanghai'd by spoilers in a quote)how they're both insane. And the flashlight showing how Batman is always trying to offer Joker rehabilitation but he's afraid Batman will quit on him halfway through.
Yes. I agree.

Sorry, I was referring to the final panel of the book, with...[highlight]: Batman strangling the Joker. I liked to think that's the killing joke of the title. That Batman knows their battles will never end until one of them is dead.
