I been reading an amazing novel lately... i think that this harry balls guy maybe just doesn't realize that everyone reads that isn't retarded. Anyways... back to what i've been reading... The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. I'm about 3/4 of the way through. Holy shit! Has anyone else read this? First you got the Mayfair family and their crazy past of all sorts of amazing supernatural events. Lasher! Is he good for the family? Is he really using these women for his own greater purpose? Incest (which is gross, but interesting the way Rice tells the story), supernatural, murders, a whole society studying this family, and (the best part) steamy sex described in such detail... that i would totally fuck Anne Rice, any lady who can write that kind of steamy shit can definitely fuck like nobody's business.

Insult? No not really, more of a humorous take on your overambitious attempt to make people think you're 'dark'. Hi, my name is Thinman and I listen to Slayer, read Anne Rice, and I'm not afraid to post what I think are disturbing pictures on forums. I'm so dark, that even the night can't see me - but that's not to say that I don't enjoy walks in the park, listening to Dylan, and singing in the church choir on bright sunny mornings.
Let me guess, you have a white fluffy poodle named Hecubus, and you take him on walks down the street and when he craps in the neighbors' yard, you snicker to yourself and say, "EVIL."
You can be emo/goth all you want, but when you throw it in everyone's face like you've been doing, the only thing you look like is a poser. Yah, sure, you manage to keep some people's attention, but by the extent of having them laugh at you. But then if that's your gig, by all means keep it going. Your inane attempt at draping the world in shadows brightens my day.
I do have one question for you, though... With the name Thinman, are you trying to imply that you have a pencil dick?

Wow!!!
I know that I am new here and all but how come on almost every single thread there is some kind of confrontation of some type. Is it really worth getting into with a pissing match with someone just because he's an idiot and I use in the kindest possible way, because it is fact that anyone who is a looser enough to get on a message board and push a bunch of peoples buttons to start a fight just because they have no life of there own is an idiot. There I said my two cents I came to this board because I figured it would be interesting conversation how about everyone else? So I believe this thread was originally about books? I am currently reading the new Laurrell Hamiliton book talk about sexy witting that lady can write some sex scenes. I would highly recommend any of her books the series I am currently reading is her Anita Blake series and it is damn good. Anyone have any other good suggestions on sci-fi or fantasy books I need to find a new author to start reading?
Peace

Check out some of the threads in this section.
A lot of good suggestions there for you.
Welcome to the stop :)
I like Stephen R. Donaldson, C.J. Cherryh, and Frederik Pohl. Of course, there are the godfathers of sci-fi: H.G. Wells, Arthur C. Clarke, and Frank Herbert... I think most of the regulars know I'm a pimp for H.P. Lovecraft as well, although a lot of his stuff was more fantastical than sci-fi.

Let's not leave out the big Dick, Mr. Philip K. Douglas Adams of course, not to mention Terry Pratchett (even though I've never read a Discworld book), and Robert Jordan (if you want to read a longer version of L.O.T.R. where women control the power, and have man slaves that protect them).
And Isaac Asimov... spent a lot of rainy summer days as a kid reading his books.

Back to book all of those are great suggestions thanks although I must say I am already a HUGE Prachett fan I own the entire discworld series and if you know anything about him and his writing you know that's a fair few books. I will definitely try a few of thouse writers ya'll suggested I have had a few of them recommended to me before but I am one of those people who is very picky about the authors she reads. Like my sister just convinced me to buy this book called Minion written by L.A. Banks this book throughly sucked and I fully intend to return it to the store for a full refund. The sad part is that this book was rewritten after it was first released to make it better then the original that she put out. Honestly with as bad as this book blows in my opinion how bad does the original have to be.

Robert Jordan (if you want to read a longer version of L.O.T.R. where women control the power, and have man slaves that protect them).
I really like how the first 8 or so books carried the story line, except for the last book, I got sick of how:
Spoilers - highlight to read -
Everyone keeps getting kidnapped. I understand how he used it to move the storyline the first couple times, but hell, how many other main and side characters are left that haven't been kidnapped yet?
Rand? Oops, he was the first one kidnapped.
Mat? No, he kidnapped someone.
Perrin? No, his wife was kidnapped.
Egwene? No, she was kidnapped.
Elayne? No, her Mom was kidnapped...
OK maybe I'm stretching it a bit but com'on man. For some reason I felt that books 8-10 lost the main storyline and were slower paced. I dunno, maybe it's just me.

I really like how the first 8 or so books carried the story line...
Don't feel bad, I think I gave up after book seven. What got me was the level of detail in the books. I felt like I was with the characters when they were brushing their teeth, going for a stroll, itching their back, putting on their clothing, talking about the weather, deciding what to have for dinner... It seemed like the later books covered the span of two to three days over the 1000 or so pages that made each one. They really slowed down, compared to the first three or four books.
Still, the books are great reads, and I imagine people with more patience (I have a few friends who are still with the series) will really enjoy the books (the first 7-8 at least). Maybe when/if the series gets done, I'll buy the remaining books in the series and do a marathon run. Way too much detail in those books for my brain to hold onto the facts it needs going from one novel to the next, when there is a year or two gap in-between the release of the novels.

Wow, I am very late on this news but Robert Jordan past away in Sept 2007.
The twelveth and final book in the Wheel of Time series will be released ~fall 2009 written by Brandon Sanderson.
The pace of the story made me think he was going for at least 15 books, the final book has so much to wrap up. Talk about filling a big set of shoes, I may have to read some of Sanderson's books to get familiar with his writing style.

Are the Jordan books any good, or is it Fantasy Jibba Jabba?

Depends what you consider jibba-jabba...
I think the first 4-5 books are considered very well written with engaging characters and a solid tempo. I started reading them almost 15? years ago (holy shit I'm old), and at the time didn't like stuff that was too fantasy oriented. The fantasy aspects of the books (to me) seem fairly down to earth in their description (I think that the fantasy aspects of the series are accessible, he works them in without asking the reader to make huge leaps of faith).
The series is usually compared in depth and scope with the likes of LoTR, Dark Tower, Sword of Shannara, etc. I have yet to finish the Dark Tower series (I finished the first book and didn't really get hooked yet). I don't know if I will read LoTR again, I haven't even thought of SoS in 10 years.
I re-read the WoT series almost every time a new book comes out, so ~ every 2 years, and find something new in it with every read. I don't think you can go wrong with the first 4 books, and if you like them, by the time you finish the series, the final book will be out without waiting 19 years to see it's conclusion. ;)

I'm tellin' ya, you gotta do it. It will change your life. The series is almost organic. It changes so much throughout (naturally and comfortably), that you HAVE to continue to read it. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. But if it's been a while since you read the Gunslinger, give it another quick read before you delve in to the rest of the story.
