I read it years ago, but I figured it was worth a mention.
The Book is the template for alot of End of the World Movies, Omega Man, night of the Living Dead, Glitter

I saw the movie... I thought it was okay but I'm sure the book was a lot better

I read it on Christmas day. It was incredible!
I got weepy more than once, outright wept at the (highlight to read) last line of the chapter about winning the dog's trust, and the ending kicked me squaw in the nuts. Why did I wait so long to pick it up?

Love this book. Funny thing though; although I put it down thinking what a great book is was; it didn't really impact on me until after I'd finished it and pondered over the story - and re-read the final chapter).
But yes, I think the ending is a great one...

Not sure, some answers in the movies thread (http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7667&page=2) are obviously cryptic.
If your thirst for knowledge is too strong, head on over to Wiki and read the plot summary. I've been tempted myself.

The movie and ending are totally different. Kind of like how the Shining book and Shining movie are different. Neither is better than the other, but they are not the same.

Alright fine
SPOILER
In the book everyone is dead or a vampire just like in the movie but these "vampires" keep their "intellect" and "personality" but no mercy or humanity, there is no dog except a stray but it eventually dies. So one day while pondering over thoughts of the dead dog he sees a women across the field. So he freaks because it's daylight and she's not dying off like the other "Vamps" so he chases her down and when he brings her back to his house he suspects her to be one of them. But when he does the whole garlic thing which works with all the other vamps it doesn't work but makes her sick but she says "It's only because that rancid smell" So he explains his theories on the vampires. Then one night the regular vampires that attack his house daily get runned and shot down but other vamps and they get in by the girl opening the door to get the main character. So they take him to a kind of prison and it turns out the woman was a vampire but had put on some kind of lotion to protect her from the uv rays that usually destroy the vampires. Also that they were starting a new society but to do taht they must destroy the old. Hence killing the other mindless vampires and the main character.
That's what went through my mind when I saw the movie because I thought the Mother and her kid were vamps.

Why would you bother posting all that? Those that have read it know, and those that haven't aren't going to read it. Jeez!

To be honest, half of what you said was nothing to do with the last line in your post. I'm not repeating it, cos I don't want another spoiler explanation. It was just a synopsis of the book.
