View Full Version : Book to Movie conversions

Somewhere to debate upcoming conversions, discuss (flame) the old ones, talk about the ones we'd like to see... You see where I'm going with this.

Personally, I can't wait to see The Historian. Only read it recently, and it's amazing.

Just saw the DragonLance movie, and its freaking terrible, if you read the books avoid it at all costs. Great cast, awful film.

Starship Trooper: Loved the book, but didn't care too much for the movie.

Re: Starship Troopers...

I liked the movie all right. Haven't been able to get my hands on the book. (Honestly, though, I haven't really tried that hard.)

Worst book to movie conversion? The Running Man.

I'd give up both my testicles to direct a better, true-to-the-book version.

They should film this. Page 6 is a blinder.

Whoa, wait they're coming out with a movie for the historian? Very cool.
One story/book that I would absolutely love to see made into a movie would be either Rage, or The Long Walk, all by Richard Bachman/Stephen King. *Yes I know they make most his short stories into movies....and yes some of them suuuuuuuuuucked beyond belief. But some didn't turn out half bad. But I would be freaking giddy as hell just to see one of those stories made into a movie.

I've heard you mention this one or two times before. Now I'm curious. I love the movie, I wonder If that would change after reading the book. (If I ever finish the Gunslinger...)

my favorite book to movie is probably "the outsiders". it's one of the few that actually took everything from the book and put it on screen. It didn't have to add anything or take anything away.

One of my favorite book to movie conversions is "High Fidelity" because the movie is different from the book in a lot of ways but still is a good movie on it's own. Yeah, the book is better, but the movie is still awesome too.

I'm waiting for a good movie adaptation of a Ken Follett book. I know they did 'eye of the needle' way back when... but I'd like to see them take all that action and thrill and put it into a movie like "the Bourne identity"

Now there's an awful adaptation! Good movie but just zero relationship to the book and then they kept it up with 2 sequels which didn't even come close to the awesomeness of the 2 next books!

I would have said Alice's Adventures in... but now Burton's doing it, I'm happy. I also liked the Fiona Fullerton version, despite what Peter Sellers thought...

Uh...dude...why even bother going to the trouble of inserting that link? There's nothing there. It's a blank IMDB page that simply says Historian (2010) at the top of the page. Don't believe everything you read on that site, it's notoriously wrong.

J.J. Abrams is converting Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series, which is probably old news by now but highly interesting if you've ever read the series, which I wholeheartidly hope you do. They're a great read, and it's going to be interesting to see what Abrams makes of them. For a seven book series it seems most likely that they'd be approached as films, but word has it he's debating an hour-long television drama series. Not too sure how that'll work, but there you go.

My favorite is "1984". It was really well made and faithful to the book; had a Alan Parker/The Wall feel to it. And speaking of being faithful to a book, "Fear and Loathing...". It is one, if not the only, book I would recommend viewing the movie first.

I hope to see it. And most importantly, I hope to see it done well. But, he's got so much on his plate, I'll believe it when I see it. After all, he bought the rights for $19. When you only pay $19 for something that huge, you can sit on it for awhile and not be out much. :)

I'm kind of excited about "Prince Caspian", even though I didn't like "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" very much. It's pretty cool they're doing the movies in the order Lewis wrote the books in. I was afraid they would put the Chronicles of Narnia in chronological order. Haha. I said chronic.

I've just about worn out my second copy.

I was wandering around Waterstones yesterday and checked to see if they had a copy. Now, I'm not stingy at all but, that novel is what, 250 pages? Perhaps less? And they were charging £7.99 for it. Sod. That.

I know killer dyller is from North Carolina like I am, and some of the smaller towns don't take too well to books about fantasies. Lots of rural counties don't allow Harry Potter, and lots of kids didn't know about The Chronicles of Narnia untill the movie came out. Heck, the only reason I know LOTR is because my parents are from Philadelphia, and I was in the Honors Literature classes in middle and high school. Most places here are against books, especially children's books, that suggest anything else but a world run by God.

Where do I start?
1) 10 minutes after joining you posted a picture of "yourself". I've been a member here for 6 months and still don't know what most of the people look like.
2) 10 minutes later you followed that with a bikini picture of "you".
3) Since then you've posted a plethora of pictures of "you" and made little 15 year old girl disparaging remarks about them, all the while purporting to be a good looking chick.

These things, along with a multitude of subtle clues and warning signs have led me to believe one of two things:
1) You are a dude.
2) You're some kind of attention whoring little girl who gains her self worth by soliciting attention from a group of people who she perceives to be sex starved Internet perverts who can't get attention from a real girl.

Now, knowing the folks around these parts the way I have come to know them, they're not the typical Internet fare so that leaves out the second part of #2. Secondly, if you were the girl in the pictures (and had the self image that you portray with your "I'm hot" statements and bullshit bravado, you'd be out catching splooge for a fraternity somewhere on the east coast, not wasting your time looking for attention on the web. For lack of a better analogy, the carpet doesn't match the drapes. Not a lot of your behavior patterns/statements etc have the continuity for it to be a real person. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of people actually made up this persona you've created.

The Cliff's notes version: You've got a dick. Everyone knows. Get past it.

Yikes, that sounds a little harsh. Granted, I haven't taken much notice of Killers posts but I don't think she's done any flaming or trouble making here. (has she?)

This one is much more like her. She is a girl. She does attended frat parties in Wilmington quite often, but it's like a 45 minute drive. She loves attention. My problem with the book was Ann Rice and her god awful writing style. I read her Mayfair Witches trilogy first and totally enjoyed them, so I went out and purchased "Queen of the Damned". I think I read about an hour of scene descriptions and then realized that I was still in Chapter 1 and nothing of substance had even occurred yet.

Queen of the damned is a fantastic book but the movie was woeful...Yet another example of authors having insufficent creative control.

I have to say though, Stuart Townsend is far and away the better Lestat. Cruise should be shot. In the groin. With a rusty musket ball. Also, dumbass Scientologists.

One of my absolute favorite book to movie conversions is:

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, the movie is great and if you can understand the book(considering its written entirely in the Droog slang), it is almost a perfect adaptation.
