Thought I would start this up in the thread it should be in.
Just finished "Bright Lights, Big City" by Jay McInerney
http://static.flickr.com/103/255301053_10cc3446c1.jpg
I enjoyed it. Very 80s. LOTS about cocaine.
It's strange though, while reading it I thought it would make a good film and then while googling the pic of the book (which I couldnt find of the copy I read but the above will do) I see that there was one made with Phoebe Cates, Keifer Sutherland and Michael J Fox!
Might have to track that down.
But yeah, good writer. Interesting tale. I'd definitely pick up more of his stuff.
God bless Heathrow airport book shops.

Hammering through some stephen king short stories. The film may have been pish but 1084 was a creepy forty or so pages. Had a sort of smothering, eerie feel to it. The idea of a room fucking you up in a slow, stoned manner was
Needless to say, loads of bollocks in the film was never there in the book. Neither was Samuel L Jackson come to think of it.

Just went through the Forgotten Realms 1st and 2nd Drizzt Do'Urden trilogies, not bad at all. Salvatore's usual not quite heroic fantasy, but a good read nonetheless.
Also just read most of David Gemmells Drenai series this week, for the bazillionth time, still as fantastic for ever.
About to go through the Wheel of Time again, because they rule so very much.
I love fantasy books :)

What a dire, pretentious, plodding, over hyped novel (And I trusted you board veterans before this)
....
I kid. :p
*** Possible Spoilers ***
In all honestly, I thought it all pretty meh in parts. I know its only the start of a larger story, but I found all the flashbacks involving Cort and Cuthbert, etc totally un-interesting. I didn't care about any of that - just catching up with the man in black.
I was also really intrigued with how Jake would be used between the two... only for him to fall down a hole.... * shrugs *
And lastly, when the two finally met, they made a fire and spoke a lot of mumble jumble that would only make sense if I were to carry on reading the series.
I felt like I'd learnt nothing. I think out of all the King books I've read, this is my least favorite - (but, hey, I gave it a try, right?)
Okay, I'm off to wiki to read the summaries on the rest of the series, but before all that...

I urge you not to give up on the series, especially after only having read The Gunslinger. Personally, I found it to be very different in feel to the rest of the series. I think King was trying to do something much more Sergio Leone-ish than his usual fare, and it resulted in rather a dry and dusty story.
At least try the next one (Drawing Of The Three, I think), and if you don't like that either, then I would say the Dark Tower's not for you. The main advantage that the next book has over the gunslinger is characters, which is King's best area, in my opinion. I found the Gunslinger somewhat lacking in that regard. Also the Gunslinger has such an oppressive setting; there's a feeling of claustrophobia throughout which makes for uncomfortable reading (at least for me, maybe I'm just a pussy, though), which the other books do not share.
Drawing of the Three is more normal King type stuff, I found: monsters, interdimentional doorways (literally), mobsters, multiple personality syndrome and a serial killer, to name a few elements of the story.
So I would advise you to read that one before deciding not to read the rest.
Oh, and if you didn't like the flashback bits, you ain't gonna like Wizard And Glass...

I'm half way through it but it's an interesting look into the rise and importance(?) of the man. The only caveat is that it's directly translated from german so each sentance has about 36 commas.

I gotta give to Max Brooks for his undying and unwaivering dedication to the subject. Zombies were like wine for me; I didn't care much for either until I had something to tell me what to look for and how to appreciate it.
That has to be the weirdest analogy I have ever made and I'm not sure if it even works, but at the end of the day, The Survial Guide has made me look at zombie movies in whole different way. Thanks Max.

Tess Gerritsen (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/exact-author=gerritsen%2C%20tess/${0}) used to be a doctor, so it comes as no great surprise that the medical aspects of her latest thriller are absolutely convincing--even if most of the action happens in a place where few doctors have ever practiced--outer space.
Dr. Emma Watson and five other hand-picked astronauts are about to take part in the trip of a lifetime--studying living creatures in space. But an alien life form, found in the deepest crevices of the ocean floor, is accidentally brought aboard the shuttle Atlantis. This mutated alien life form makes the creatures in Aliens (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000ILDE/${0}) look like backyard pets. Soon the crew are suffering severe stomach pains, violent convulsions, and eyes so bloodshot that a gallon of Murine wouldn't help. Gerritsen brilliantly describes the difficulties of treating sick people inside a space module, and how the lack of gravity affects the process of taking blood and inserting a nasal tube. Dr. Watson does her best, but her colleagues die off one by one and the people at NASA don't want to risk bringing the platform back to earth. Only Emma's husband, a doctor/astronaut himself, refuses to give up on her. As we read along, eyes popping out of our heads, all that's missing is one of those bland NASA voices saying, "Houston, we have a problem--we're being attacked by tiny little creatures that are part human, part frog, and part mouse."
-from Amazon.com. I'm planning on checking some of her other books.

I'm a big reader. I have a book ALWAYS, or I feel like I'm going insane.
I love Stephen King. I read the Gunslinger/Dark Tower series a couple times over now, and love it so much. Keep reading. It ties nearly every book in his catalogue together.
I enjoy Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series. I love James Patterson and his Alex Cross series.
Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. American Gods may be my favorite book of all time.
I also love Lee Child's Reacher series. Such a kick ass character.

I have thought of just buying the collective work.
The Long Work in particular sounds very interesting.
I heard that The Long Walk was being made into a movie... can't remember when or if it's even true... guess I should look it up.
But I've got two beers in and another on it's way, so...
Rage would have made a good flick, but... Thanks a pant load, Columbine.
Roadwork... I liked that one a lot. One man giving a big 'fuck you' to the system.

The Gunslinger, for me, rates right behind The Bachman Books and The Stand, which still means they're 1, 2, and 3 on my list of all time favorites... No. 4 would be Eyes of the Dragon and 5 would be It. Six is the Lord of the Rings series...
Incidentally, the only book to ever give me the heebie jeebies was Pet Semetary.

I'm 20 pages before the end of Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman.
I haven't had a second to polish it off today, what with packing and everything. I will say though that even without closure, I think it's a better read than American Gods, which I really liked.
It's also funnier.

One of the books we were sent at Salient for review this week is called 'What They Teach You At Harvard Business School' by a british bloke who's name I can't remember right now and can't be bothered looking up who took the MBA course there between 2004 and 2006. I'm nearly halfway through, picking it up whenever I'm in the office, and I've already laughed, been terrified, felt sorry for the bloke and been inspired to look into doing an MBA myself one day. Which is worrying because my mother is one of the heads of the MBA programme at my university, I may be becoming like her! *deer in headlights expression*

I felt that it treated vampires like a virus. If one feeds on you, you are then a vampire. I don't like that methodology. I prefer the idea that a vampire has to make a decision to turn you. It makes more sense to me.

I was merely pointing out it seemed like the Vampire Chronicles association came from left field and that you were arguing with a statement that I never made. And I also was the first to point out that if that was the way that I come off when I'm giving a newb a hard time, that I'd gladly rethink my approach...because it's unpleasant. Dude. Get over it. Seriously. For a person that pokes at new people even more than I do and with less provocation, you'd think you'd either A) have thicker skin or B) have a go with less personal investment. I disagreed with your point, and didn't understand where it was coming from. It felt like it was out of left field and was simply made for the sake of arguing for argument's sake. That was the way that I interpreted it. If getting pushback from someone on here makes you so uncomfortable, you need to seriously reassess your behavior. See: Aaron and my discussion from a week or two ago. I said something that pissed him off, I assessed it, took stock of how it made him feel. We had our little tiff and no big deal. They're not for everyone, (er 1920's horror generally isn't) but Lovecraft and Ashton-Smith write some top drawer weird stuff. A bit like Poe but more surreal.
They wrote mostly short stuff so you can dip in and find something good. Either way it doesn't take up much time.

I haven't gone back to it in a while, but the first book to come to mind was Glamorama by Bret Easton Ellis (author of American Psycho).
It would be hard to describe, but I can't imagine this book coming out now without a huge controversy. It starts as a story about insanely shallow socialites and devolves into...well, you have to read it yourself but I really like it. Don't be scared by the name

Shit, yeah. I saw this and had to get it:
http://www.howardworks.com/gollancz-chroniclesofconan.jpg
I'd never read any Conan stories before, but I'm enjoying what I've read so far. Howard's attitude to women in his stories is hilarious; they're all either timid, delicate slave-girls who shriek and quiver with fear at the slightest provokation (and are often naked for no reason whatsoever), or are evil, power-hungry bitch queens, who use their sexual wiles to accomplish whatever nefarious scheme they're planning.
My favourite stories so far are the ones where the bad guy Conan is fighting is some spirit or demon or otherworldly monster, rather than a human.
The only thing missing from the collection is illustrations. I'd love to see some of the original illustrations that went with the stories in the pulp magazines they were first printed in. Actually, I think I've just cottoned on to why the slave-girls tend to be naked...

It's a cracking read so far. The man was clearly intelligent beyond any normal measure, although what surprises me most is just how funny and light it is in parts.

I must say this book is very interesting. It's primarily about Russia discovering the largest oil reserve as well as the largest gold mine in Siberia. These tremendously lucrative finds are much larger than any other in the world. More so than the Persian Gulf and Africa.
It basically tells the story from the different viewpoints of all the nations and individual people who are involved and what they are all doing about it. Naturally people want a slice. A good read so far and I recommend it.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a book to read that isn't written by a famous author? I have been reading a bunch of books lately by famous authors and I have been completely disappointed.
Jim Thompson- wrote The Getaway, The Grifters, The Transgressors (reading that right now) and about 30 other books.
I like 'm. Hard boiled crime and punishment stories set on the fringes of society, originally published in pulp rags. He's not real famous- don't see a lot of his books at the big box stores. He collaborated with Kubrick on a few scripts.

My dad sent me some books that I read in Jr High.
The Myth Adventures by Robert Asprin. I think there are 18 books in the entire series. The first 9 are really good. I haven't read past the 9th book for a long time, so I can't really remember the rest. The series follows the adventures of a magicians apprentence and his teacher, who is a magician that has lost his powers. The writing is geared for those in their late teens, but still good.

So after years of trying to get through The Gunslinger (I'm not a fan of fantasy literature so it wasn't exactly up my alley), I finally just sat down and forced myself to read the damn thing.
It was ok, definitely not my favorite King book, but the last 10-15 pages peaked my interest enough for me to buy The Drawing of the Three.
Just got done reading The Drawing of the Three a couple of days ago and LOVED IT! Fantastic stuff.
Haven't started book 3 yet, but I can't wait.
In the meantime I found an out of print copy of Steven Soderbergh's sex, lies and videotape diaries. If you are at all interested in filmmaking be it as a filmmaker or just interested in the process and how movies are made, you HAVE to read this book. But be forewarned: its hard to find.

I'm 3/4 of the way through the Gunslinger. I'm having trouble really getting into it, but I don't think it's the actual book that's the problem so much as my current frame of mind. I absolutely loathed the miniseries they made out of The Stand. I just don't understand why so much has to be changed. I have no problem with the normal modifications and changes that go into adapting a book into a film or miniseries. I get it and sometimes even enjoy it--Forest Gump is an example of a movie that is superior to the novel in every way.
But sometimes I think they just change stuff to cut corners and make it easier and in doing so they suck the life out of what could be great movies.
On top of that the acting and production value that go along with a made for TV movie/miniseries...its just more than I can take
Now, on the other hand, sometimes a good director can take a novel or short story, find powerful themes or elements that they like and then turn it into something entirely their own--the obvious being The Shinning. Another one would be Christopher Nolan's adaptation of his brother's short story "Memento Mori"

Na brah, I think what he meant was that because the human forms sole function is to reproduce, all our bodies can focus on for a lifetime is sex and passing on the gene.
So I guess it makes sense that all your subconcious mind will constantly think about is continuing the line, and that thought or feeling or emotion or whatever your mind sees as thinking for itself will leak into your sleeping, conscious mind.

Think about it this way, Z. You, me, JK, Aaron, and Phitzy go out on a camping trip. Everyone here knows we love each other like brothers. It's all about the comaraderie. We all know we wouldn't do the other one(except, I'd do Phitzy), but we are still "brothers in arms". This is what I get out of this flick. Does that make the flick any better for ya? Think about it, bitch. ;)
First of all...I agree with all of that.
Secondly...I know what they were trying to do with the movie...the dialogue just made it pretty boy on boy. If ya know what I'm sayin'. :D
