((this is my first post :P ))
are there any manga fans here,
I myself am a avid collector of manga/anime
my favourite manga is elfen lied
the artwork is simply beautiful and the charecters are amazing, and the level of nudity and gore is also amazing
the backstory is about a new race of human, diclonius, who have horns and invisible hands that can kill.these diclonius aer captured and experiments are done on them (in the anime a child diclonius has cannon balls shot at her to see what speed of cannon balls would kill her((you actually see this happen))
one of the diclonius, lucy, escapes (after killing everyone violently >= ) )
as she is leaving the island labratory, she is shot in the head but survives
this shot, causes lucys mind to split creating a alternatate personality, nyuu who can only say one word, and is very child-like and kind, two humans find her and so the plot begins
it also happens to be my fave anime series as well
some of the sub plots are rather upsetting amd there are some pretty fucked up scenes, but i wont spoil it for you,
if you are into gory, dark animes or manga i reccomend elfen lied
but there is only one thing i reccomend you do while watching.....bring tissues, because it is so upsetting at times,it really is a emotianol rollercoaster,it makes men cry,and chances are you willl cry,....here is a amv of some of the scenes
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=S1V83zHz5b0&feature=channel_page
the other mangas i collect are
elemantal gelade (main charecter has a fish hook as a weapon :P )
rurouni kenshin (haz swords)
cased closed (midget detectives)
chobits (human computers... internet porn not included)
and many more
so if you like manga, are a avid collector,or just want to discuss manga,
this thread is the place for you ^_^

I enjoy Naruto despite it's popularity. I've always enjoyed the underdog characters making good. Especially when at every turn they make mistakes. Flawed characters rule.
I Luv Halloween is another series I liked. Too bad they quit after book 3, but bang for buck there is more twisted humor in this series than I've ever seen.
The Drifting Classroom is an older series that even today manages to creep me out with it's mystery. How it manages to be simple and convey atmosphere is still a msytery to me, but I like it.

What does popularity have to do with quality?
I am surprised to see this thread, I feel like most people that love American comics absolutely hate manga for some reason. I very much enjoy manga have a small collection. Even though I am male and in my mid twenties I still love getting manga at the book store, standing there reading a couple chapters thinking whether or not to get it.
Battle Royale 1-15
Dragon ball 1-16
Dragon ball z 1-26
Dr. Slump 1-6
vagabond 1-6
Vagabond is the one I am reading right now, I had not herd of it until recently but saw that three in one books sitting there and decided to read a few pages. I was hooked The story is very fast paced, I like that this book has real Japanese names. It is just a good book all around to me I guess.
Thank you every one who is also a nerd with me and still reads manga!:D

The library I work in gets a constant stream of Bleach and Naruto...its something to do when the library is slow. We also have a bunch of other assorted titles that I don't recall the name of.

Another pretty gory/graphic manga is Gantz.
It's basically about people who have died are copied a second before they actually die (Don't ask how) to hunt aliens...for some reason. It's pretty vague even though they are up to about the 296 chapter. It's got normal flawed characters who are trying to deal with these extraordinary circumstances.
Highly recommend it, and I believe it is distributed through Dark Horse in N.A.

296 chapter
That's what I don't like about manga, same goes for most comics too, they just go on forever. I need a definite beginning, middle and end to a story.

Me too. That's my biggest problem with a lot of comics right there. They feel too much like illustrated soap operas.

The manga versions of Hellsing and Trigun are awesome; they include a lot of bitchin' content that got omitted by the anime adaptations. And I've only read the first volume of the Black Lagoon manga but if the series followed the first few arcs verbatim, it's bound to be the dog's bollocks.
